Food Waste - 7/1/10

Our family loves cottage cheese. LOVES it. My daughter and son regularly eat it for snacks, and we add it to all sorts of dishes--macaroni & cheese, scalloped potatoes, mashed potatoes, etc. My 20 month old daughter will not eat meat (I think it is the texture), but she devours cottage cheese, so I buy it quite often. A few weeks ago, none were on sale, so I bought this store brand cottage cheese. Big mistake! It was so salty, my daughter ate one bite and refused it. (Then later she threw up. That's how salty it was.)

I had this problem before when I bought unbranded hash browns; they were so salty we had to throw the whole bag out. So, the whole tub of cottage cheese ($2.69) went in the garbage. Lesson learned; read the labels!

I got the spinach on sale for .99; it was set to expire 6/30, so I got it out on 6/29 to sautee for dinner. It was all nasty looking and smelled funky. I have never smelled spinach like that. (.49 cents down the drain.)

The bag of lettuce was also .99 and we made it through most of the bag before I discovered it had turned brown. (.25)

Lastly, there was enough sloppy joe left for one sandwich, but somehow it didn't get eaten. (.75)

Food waste for this week = 4.18
Food waste since February 1st = 61.46

That's so cool how you're tracking the actual money you've wasted. I should do that!

I've had the same experience with Cottage Cheese brands other than Knudsen (my favorite). Some are inedible! Ralph's (Kroger) isn't too bad, but Knudsen is the best. When I lived in NY I loved Breakstone - I think they sold a salt free version (it's been so long, I can't remember if that was it) and it had some amazing flavor. I can't find that brand in Los Angeles though...
