Food Waste, 2/11/10

Last week we made a beef dish in the slow cooker that required 1/2 can of cream of mushroom soup. My husband made the meal and put the other 1/2 can of the soup in the refrigerator, where it sat until I threw it out today.

We also wasted a package of cream cheese that expired on 1/7/10. Honestly, I can't remember how long ago I bought it or even why I bought it.

This week, I decided that in addition to showing my food waste, I should also put a price on it. I believe I bought each item for .99, so our waste this week cost us roughly $1.50. $1.50 straight in the garbage.

I like your idea of putting a price on our food waste. It definitely makes us think of the financial cost on top of the fact that it is wasted food that shouldn't have been wasted!

Some things have an expiration date that isn't very accurate, but you have to be careful so you don't have food poisoning. I have found that cream cheese can go far beyond the date without any trouble, but I suppose someone (nowadays) could sue me for such info...FYI: I would have used it if it wasn't moldy and not thought twice about it.
