Food Waste Wednesday, 6/17/09 (Late Edition)

It pains me to write this because I had a great no-waste week last week. This week was just the opposite!

My most annoying waste was this container of tomatoes. I bought them at the store on Friday, and Sunday, two days later, I pulled them out to make this delicious Guacamole Salad for a potluck I was going to, and the tomatoes looked like this:

I was so mad! I should have taken them back to the store to complain, but I didn't have time. My husband had to run to the store to get fresh tomatoes, and we were 20 minutes late to the party.
I also wasted these mushrooms.
I meant to use them for a mushroom/broccoli/chicken pasta dish, but it was a time-consuming dish and this week turned out to be hectic, so I didn't get to make it. My husband was able to use a few, but when I pulled them out on Wednesday to use in a different dish, they looked like this.

Tomatoes are so finicky! I wasted some lettuce that had gotten pushed to the back of the fridge.

I hate when I buy something and it spoils quickly! Some times I take things back, but I try to balance it with the time Iam losing and gas I am wasting to do so...

I'm sorry you had some wasted food this week - that's always an aggravation! One idea to help fresh mushrooms last longer is to remove them from their plastic containers and store them in a plain brown paperbag (the lunch size works well) in the vegetable keeper in your fridge. I find they last so much longer this way.
