Food Waste Wednesday, 7/15/09

Well, the last few weeks it has been just downright embarrassing posting food waste. Maybe it is something about summer. . .

The waste here includes 1 carrot stick cut up, about 1/3 bag of spinach that was WAY beyond saving, a little bit of brown rice and a serving of chili. We made the chili at my mom's when we were on vacation, carted it back to our house when it was about 3 days old, and then it sat in the refrigerator for quite awhile longer, so it was time to toss.

I can live with that food waste. What made me sick though, was the hamburger buns. I bought them last Monday planning on using them for a hamburger recipe on Thursday. By Thursday, 3 days later!, they had already molded. I guess it is because of the summer and our terrible windows that don't keep humidity out, even when our window units are working. (It wasn't total waste because we fed it to the birds, but I was not planning on spending $2, which the buns cost, to feed the birds!)

My husband and I sat down and decided that for the rest of the summer I will do our grocery shopping twice a week to avoid waste like this.

I keep my breads in the refrigerator and they keep for weeks. You can also put them in the freezer and they keep even longer.
